Prof. Carlo De Michele has been a Professor of Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (DICA) at Politecnico di Milano since June 2019. He served as an Associate Professor at Politecnico di Milano from 2008 to 2019, following his tenure as an Assistant Professor in the same department since 1999. Prof. De Michele has been an active member of several prestigious scientific organizations, including the International Association of Hydrological Sciences, European Geosciences Union, American Geophysical Union. His research interests are broad and impactful, encompassing statistics, stochastic and multivariate modeling of hydrologic extremes, and climate and environmental variability effects. My current research goals range from the development multiscale algorithms (e.g., MPR) to improve the parameterization of land surface and hydrological models. These models are aimed to the monitoring, modeling, forecasting and prediction of drought/heatwaves and floods, from local to global scales. I am a Lead Research and Technology Associate at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology, where I started a group on "Water and vegetation in a changing environment" (WAVE) in 2017, funded through an ATTRACT fellowship by the Luxembourg Research Fund (FNR). I hold a degree in Biology from the University of Freiburg (Germany) and a PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of Western Australia. Between my PhD and current employment, I worked as a scientist at the Max Planck Instutute for Biogeochemistry in Jena (2007-2011) and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (2011-2017). Throughout my career, I have been investigating the interactions between vegetation, soil and atmosphere and the resulting hydrologic behaviour of hillslopes and catchments. I combine mathematical analysis with numerical modelling to generate hypotheses, and engage in lab and field observations to test these hypotheses and formulate new questions. Pieter was a PostDoc researcher and thereafter lecturer and professor at the University of Zimbabwe from 1993 to 2003. He has special interests in agricultural water management, water allocation issues in catchment areas and in the management of transboundary river basins, on which he has published widely. Pieter is fascinated by the dynamic relationship between biophysical and social processes when managing water, and in understanding patterns of cooperation over water. Pieter has a track record of formulating and guiding major interdisciplinary research and capacity building projects, including in Eswatini (Swaziland), Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Kenya, Mexico, Mozambique, Senegal, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Vietnam and Zimbabwe. Pieter is associate editor of Water Policy, and member of the editorial board of Hydrology and Earth System Sciences. Pieter studied irrigation engineering at Wageningen University, and obtained his PhD degree on a study of irrigation management in Mexico. Dr Micha Werner is Associate Professor in the Water Resources and Ecosystems Department at IHE Delft Institute for Water Education. His research and experience are on the application of hydrological knowledge, data and models in operational water management; with a focus on hydrological extremes, droughts and floods, as well as on water allocation and reservoir operation. He enjoys working with both scientists and practitioners across a range of disciplines to investigate how climate information is communicated and used through climate services. Within this context he is currently the principal investigator of a major H2020 Research project seeking to innovate climate services through integration of local and scientific knowledge, in support of adaptation practices to cope with drought and climate change. He is an active member of the scientific community, including the European Geophysical Union (EGU), research groups such as HEPEX and the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) group on Drought in the Anthropocene, and also serves as editor to the Hydrology and Earth Systems Sciences Journal. He currently represents IHE as support base partner to the WMO International Drought Management Programme (IDMP), and serves on an expert advisory panel to the Netherlands Government on Freshwater and Drought. From 1995 through 2021, Micha held a position as Senior Hydrologist at Deltares, working in the Operational Water Management group, where he was one of the principal investigators in developing the DELFT-FEWS forecasting system, now used in over 50 operational centres globally. He has developed a strong track record in establishing operational forecasting and early warning systems around the world; including those in the United States, England and Wales, Scotland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Sudan, Pakistan and the United States.

Within this context he is currently the principal investigator of a major H2020 Research project seeking to innovate climate services through integration of local and scientific knowledge, in support of adaptation practices to cope with drought and climate change. He is an active member of the scientific community, including the European Geophysical Union (EGU), research groups such as HEPEX and the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) group on Drought in the Anthropocene, and also serves as editor to the Hydrology and Earth Systems Sciences Journal. He currently represents IHE as support base partner to the WMO International Drought Management Programme (IDMP), and serves on an expert advisory panel to the Netherlands Government on Freshwater and Drought. From 1995 through 2021, Micha held a position as Senior Hydrologist at Deltares, working in the Operational Water Management group, where he was one of the principal investigators in developing the DELFT-FEWS forecasting system, now used in over 50 operational centres globally. He has developed a strong track record in establishing operational forecasting and early warning systems around the world; including those in the United States, England and Wales, Scotland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Sudan, Pakistan and the United States.
